12 Eylül 1980 darbesi, IMF ile yapılan anlaşma ve 24 Ocak 1980 ekonomi kararlarının hemen ardından yapıldı, böylece kapitalizmin neoliberal dönem uygulamalarına geçiş sağlandı. Darbe ile ABD’nin “yeşil kuşak” projesine de hizmet edildi, dinci gericilik ve  “Türk-İslam sentezi” desteklendi, laikliğin tasfiyesinin ve bugünkü siyasal İslam rejiminin yolu açıldı.
